The class discussion this week demonstrated a number
of interesting things that Web 2.0 tools and the internet can be used for. First, there was a discussion of the
difference between students and teachers in terms their familiarity with
technology. Students in today’s schools
are considered Digital Natives, because they have always lived in a world where
modern information technology, computers, and other forms of modern
computer-based technologies are common.
Teachers on the other hand are Digital Immigrants, because they have
known a world without these technologies.
I believe it is essential for teachers to use more information
technology in their classrooms, especially technology such as smart boards and
the internet. The second discussion was
based on a lecture given by Clay Shirky, a professor from NYU, at a Web 2.0
conference. His lecture really opened my
eyes to how much Web 2.0 technology can be used in society as a whole, and how
much it can benefit society. I feel as a
society our civic institutions need to begin to institute information
technology and Web 2.0 tools more to make government more efficient and
responsive to its constituents.
